Krystal Small, founder of Dierre Community Housing Group
Why I Created Dierre

A personal mission with a lasting purpose.

My name is Krystal Small, and I am a Los Angeles native. I created Dierre Community Housing Group from both personal experience and a genuine commitment to serving the community that raised me.

Dierre is named in honor of my late brother, Kevin Dierre Carey, who struggled with substance use and ultimately passed away from an overdose at just 34 years old. His journey and loss are deeply personal to me. They are a large part of why I felt called to this work and why I chose to enter it with my heart first. His experience showed me the difference between simply giving someone somewhere to sleep and creating a home where they are treated with dignity, where the spaces they live in are clean, thoughtfully maintained, and cared for with integrity, where they are surrounded by structure, and where they are given the space to rebuild.

I received my Master's degree in Diverse Community Development Leadership from California State University, Northridge, where I also earned my bachelor's degree in Communication Studies. Together with my professional background in human resources, workforce outreach, talent operations, and people-centered programs, my education has shaped how I approach this work with thoughtful structure, accountability, empathy, and a commitment to community.

“My brother’s name is attached to these homes, and I want them to represent the kind of place I would have wanted for him: clean, safe, structured, respectful, and filled with possibility.”
